Weekly Insights: Getting to the Truth in the Age of Misinformation...

Everyone has a deep story to tell and many life experiences to share that contain so much wisdom. Each person on the planet has a special journey unfolding that contains great truths revealing a path toward Love. Our experiences are like grains of sand on the Earth, so completely infinite in their nature and abundant in their cause. What gives these experiences deeper meaning is our ability to scroll out of them to look at the bigger picture. When we open our eyes to see the truth, sometimes the people around us aren't ready to hear it or see it al all. It is much easier to believe a lie, or to spread a lie that we feel is completely true, than it is to accept a painful truth that challenges us.

Looking back at society when I was a child, there were a lot of topics that were off the table and not talked about at all. It was taboo to discuss your problems in front of others, unless you were seeking professional help. This allowed destructive, abusive, and dark energies to thrive in the shadows. The less exposure to the light of day, the longer the painful truths persisted. It is the reason why this age of truth is such a transformational time for change. In this communication era with all of its transparency and digital exposure, it is hard to avoid the truth completely. The challenge is the abundance of misleading information and lies, and the manipulation of truth for power, money, and control. While it is so important to share our stories and truths, it is hard to know if something is authentic or if it was created to gain a specific result. People are paid to stay quiet or to lie for a reason or a cause, while others are being manipulated. Some groups use the theory that the more you repeat something untrue, the more people start believing that it is in fact true - even if there is no truth present. Only 15% of the population gets their news from a professional news organization. That means that 85% of people in our country go online for their daily news. The internet is not the healthiest space to try and receive proper information. It is a proven fact that other countries prey on internet addicts to spread disinformation in order to divide and conquer for their gain. Also, there are so many opinions from self-proclaimed "experts" or "know-it-alls" that are not fact-based at all. How can we navigate through it all to find our way back to the truth?

Experts say that there are three issues we are dealing with in society related to the truth vs lies epidemic. The first is all of the misinformation. Misinformation includes any form of spreading false information. This could be through a rumor, gossip, joke, or prank, or it could be from someone who heard it from someone, who heard it from someone, who heard it from a friend. The second is disinformation. Disinformation is the intentional distribution of false information. This could be through a scam, forgery, or greater hoax that serves the purpose of misleading others into believing a lie over the truth. It is used to manipulate people into believing in something that will affect their behavior or their actions in that direction. The last way is called an infodemic. An infodemic is when there is so much contradicting information that it is difficult to trust any source at all. We see this on the internet daily. There are contradicting truths everwhere, but no one confirms or denies any of it. All of these issues are impossible to stop in today's world, but we can come together and rally around the truths that we do know to be real. The more that people speak out and share the truth, the more that the consensus can feel inspired to speak the truth. There is power in numbers, and the truths that spread in a community can cut through all of the misinformation and disinformation out there.

Arizona State University offers some great guidelines to navigate in this world of misinformation. Here are a few tools to use in order to magnify the truth and fight against false information spreading worldwide. Always find out what other information is out there on the topic of discussion. Read beyond the headlines because they can be very misleading. Pay attention to where you are getting your news, and try to get your information from many different sources in order to hear where they agree and where they contradict or disagree with one another. When someone shares something untrue - say something. It is up to each of us to expose the lies and misleading information out there in order to better navigate through this reality. Finally, when reading an article, search deeper. Look for the sources who wrote the information, and check to see if they are even sited in the article. The sources who have to sign and agree to professional ethics guidelines are the best ones to follow, but the research should help to uncover if the source is reliable or if the information has been confirmed by a reliable source. Do your research because it is the responsible thing to do. If you want to spread information so people are aware, take the time to make sure that it is factual - especially in this Mercury Retrograde time.

Allow the truth to guide the way. At the end of the day, we are karmically responsible for what we say, write, or share with others. For the sake of all that is good and righteous, remember that the truth is the highest virtue that sets us free and helps us find our way in the midst of darkness. Practice Truth, and the Truth shall bless you with more Truth, and follow you protectively throughout your life.
