The 36th state admitted to the US was Nevada, on October 31st, 1864. Nevada is known as the Battle-Born State because it became a state during the Civil War, the Sagebrush State for the abundance of Wild Sagebrush that grows there, and the Silver State because of how significant silver has been to the economy and the history of the state. Also, the name Nevada comes from nieve in Spanish, which means "snow-capped". It was the first state to ratify the 15th Amendment on March 1, 1869, that gave African-American men the right to vote. Nevada produces about 3/4 of the gold that is mined in the country. The state capital of Nevada is Carson City. The state bird is the Mountain Bluebird, the state flower is the Big Sagebrush, and the state tree is the Bristlecone Pine.

The first people to live in the state of Nevada were the Paleo-Indians between 10,500 and 14,800 years ago. The Native Americans of the Washoe, Northern Paiute, Southern Paiute, Western Shoshone, and Fort Mojave tribes were the five major tribes of Nevada that were able to preserve their identity longer than most other areas due to their location, and the time it took settlers to find the state. They were mobile and moved within their territory every season in order to receive the various sources of food being grown across the land. Today, there are 28 federally recognized Native American tribes, bands, and communities in Nevada with over 200 tribal languages, and their land covers over 1.6 million acres.

The Spanish were the first settlers to arrive to Nevada in the 1800's. The USA acquired Nevada after the victory of the Mexican-American War in 1848. It was initially incorporated as part of the Utah Territory in 1850. Once silver was discovered in 1859, the population grew rapidly, and the Nevada Territory was established on March 2, 1861. Abraham Lincoln was up for reelection, and the US Congress quickly admitted Nevada in as the 36th state in order to have more Republican support in this territory. When President Lincoln proposed the 13th Amendment to ban slavery, this decision paved the pathway for Nevada to become a state. In the end, Abraham Lincoln became president, and congress approved the 13th Amendment to ban slavery nationwide.
